Solar Thermal for heating

On new-build homes or renovation projects, solar thermal can be used to assist home heating. Ideally, underfloor heating or high-efficiency radiators should be used to maximise solar heat input.

Depending on the house size and efficiency, a large solar thermal system is installed (usually between 40 and 90 tubes) and a large thermal store connected – normally 300-1000 litres – to the system. Because of the thermal store size, they are best installed in utility room or basement/garage, but they can be specially engineered to fit existing airing cupboards.

The thermal stores are of a tank-in-tank design, with the inner tank giving high pressure hot water, and the larger outer tank giving heating water. The tanks have multiple connections for gas/oil boilers, wood-burning stoves, heat pumps and immersion heaters, with a coil in the bottom for solar thermal.

Typically, solar thermal can provide around 50% of heating requirements in this way.

To quote for this type of system, detailed plans and a site survey are required – please email details through to us
