Using solar panels for swimming pools is probably the best possible case for solar power, giving a payback in some cases of only 3-4 years.
There are various types of panels used to heat swimming pools, starting from basic unglazed panel and matting systems – which are OK but don’t really perform well enough in the British climate, requiring huge areas of coverage – to more sophisticated options.
We use the highest quality glazed solar flat plate collectors of evacuated tube, and if possible link the system to the house as well, so that in winter the system can cover some domestic hot water needs, and in summer help both the pool and the house.
The pool ideally needs to be within 25 metres of the house and the panels could be either by the house or by the poolside.
The solar thermal system can work in conjunction with all other forms of pool heating, or can heat the pool on it’s own.
