What is a solar park?

A solar park is a commercial or utility scale solar PV system, often but not exclusively developed on agricultural land – sometimes also referred to as a solar farm.

Solar parks are most often constructed by developers who enter into long term (25 year) land lease agreements with farmers or landowners who are paid an inflation index rent for the use of their land.

Once the solar generator has completed its first year of operation and met its performance targets the developer will usually assign the lease to a third party investor such as a pension fund.

Solar park design and environmental impact

Solar parks cause very little environmental impact and do not require a ‘change of use’ as they are given 25 year temporary planning consent. They can co-exist alongside use of the land for grazing sheep or poultry, as well as fulfil set aside land and biodiversity enhancement objectives. If required a solar park can be completely removed without trace.

Developers and investors

If you are looking for an investor to develop a solar farm on your land, Solarsense can help find a suitable investor and then carry out all the relevant development work for you.

Planning consent and grid connection

The National Planning Policy Framework (NPPF) offers significant encouragement for renewable energy projects and the majority of UK planning applications for solar parks have been granted to date. However, the potential for and cost of connection to the 11kV or 33kV electricity supply grids is a key factor in site and project viability.

Solarsense are flexible and can provide full design and planning consultancy services including; pre-application meetings, full planning applications, preliminary and formal enquiries to the relevant DNO and more.

Monitoring, operations and maintenance

We offer a range of tailored services from remote metering and monitoring to predictive maintenance to ensure that your solar park operates at maximum efficiency.

Our remote meter monitoring solution will immediately highlight any inverter issues or system faults so that your solar park remains fully operational and you don’t lose money in the long-term.

Everything you need to make an informed decision

What is a solar park?
A solar park or solar farm is a large-scale solar photovoltaic array that is installed to generate renewable electricity. The solar panels convert direct sunlight into electricity and feed it into the local electricity grid via inverters, which convert the current from DC to AC.
How much land is required for a solar park?
A 5MW solar park will typically require around 25 acres of land (10 Hectares). As a rule of thumb, you will require approximately 5 acres per MW of installed solar panels.
