Free Solar PV installations - too good to be true?
The premise:
A solar company will install a free solar system on your house, and you get to keep the electricity.
The facts:
- You get a free solar system certainly, and benefit from free electricity, around £200 annual savings on your bill from a 4kWp system.
- You cannot store the electricity, so must be in the house during peak daylight hours to make the most of it.
- You will lose out on around £1450 per year tax free income from the Feed In Tariff, this will go to the free solar company. You could be keeping this if you installed the system yourself (return on investment of around 10%).
- You will have a 25-year contract, and may find it difficult to sell your house during this period. A house with an on-roof system generating around £1650 per annum for its owner is an attractive prospect, however one making £1450 for a third party and tied in to a 25 year contract is effectively like having a sitting tenant on the roof, which could put people off.
