Using solar thermal for swimming pools is probably the best possible case for solar power, giving a payback in some cases of only 3-4 years.
There are various types of solar panels or collectors used to heat swimming pools, starting from basic unglazed panel-and-matting systems - which have stood the test of time, but do not tend to perform well enough in the British climate and require huge coverage areas - through to more sophisticated options using vacuum tube technology which allows complete insulation from external weather conditions.
Solarsense use the highest quality evacuated tube solar collectors.
We have been installing collectors consisting of manifolds of evacuated tubes by innovative vacuum tube manufacturer Thermomax (now part of Kingspan Renewables) for over 10 years.
When installing solar thermal for swimming pools, we would also link the system to the main building hot water cylinder where possible, so that in winter the system can cover some of the building’s hot water needs, and in summer help both the pool and the house.
Indoor pools are the best application of solar thermal as the heat loss from the pool itself is minimised. However it is also possible to heat outdoor pools in this way. The pool ideally needs to be within 25 metres of the building and the manifolds of vacuum tubes could be either on the roof of the building or by the poolside. The solar thermal system can work in conjunction with all other forms of pool heating, or can heat the pool on its own.
We have installed solar thermal systems to heat swimming pools for a number of schools as well as our award-winning flagship thermal installation at the Clifton Lido, which is one of the largest thermal systems in the country.
A survey will be required to accurately price for solar pool heating. Please contact us for more information.
