Bristol City Council: Solar for Schools Programme

Solarsense worked closely with Bristol City Council to help deliver what was at the time, the largest solar for schools programme in the UK. In total 35 schools throughout Bristol received a solar PV installation, combining to produce 550kWp. The combined installations are predicted to save the local authority more than £60,000 per year.

Each project differed in size depending on the available roof space and orientation. Solarsense worked collaboratively with all the schools to identify the most disruptive elements of the works and put in place a schedule which minimised impact on the school working day. The installations were completed quickly and with little or no impact on the children’s learning.

Due to the number of individual parties involved with the installations, Solarsense developed a unique ‘Illustrated Method Statement’ which would demonstrate exactly what the installation would entail. This could then be made available to personnel at the school, its teachers, boards and governors, shared within the council and used as precise instruction to engineers and installers.

As part of the scheme, Solarsense included a data logger and weather station on each installation, so that the schools could collect and monitor the solar data as part of their curriculum.

BEIS Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme

The Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) has launched a £1 billion grant for Public Sector organisations. The decarbonisation scheme provides funding for energy efficiency measures  and heat decarbonisation across the public sector, central government departments and non-departmental public bodies.

This funding is for non-domestic buildings in England, to support the delivery of green investment initiatives such as commercial solar panel systems. It is hoped that this will then deliver “significant” carbon and financial savings in the public sector and stimulate the economy.

Somerset Council Climate Emergency Fund

The Somerset Council Climate Emergency Fund allows city, town and parish councils as well as community organisations in unparished areas across Somerset, to bid for up to £75,000 to spend towards carbon reduction projects. This is to contribute to making Somerset resilient to the effects of Climate Change, improving conditions for the local community.

Everything you need to make an informed decision

Are all Solarsense operatives qualified and do they carry CSCS cards as standard?
Our installation team all hold the relevant CSCS and site safety cards.
Can my business continue to operate during a solar panel installation?
Yes, in most cases installing solar panels will not affect your business operating as normal. For obvious reason we advise that schools, academies and other educational institutes install their solar PV system outside of term times if possible.
Can you install solar panels top a roof containing asbestos?
The simple answer is yes. However, as a professional company with a high regard for health and safety, there are procedures that we must follow. If there is a perceived risk we will arrange for a specialist company to take samples and test them. The turn-around from the laboratory on this is 3-4 days. If asbestos is found we will still be able to complete the installation, however, we will have to add a small premium to the cost of the job to cover respiration equipment, full-body suits, gloves and shoe covers for all workers.
Is Solarsense accredited for health & safety?
Solarsense has demonstrated compliance with the CHAS standards in line with SSIP Core Criteria and UK H&S Legislation and has been awarded accreditation to the requirements of the CDM Regulations 2015. In addition to health and safety accreditation, Solarsense has also demonstrated full compliance with the following 6 modules of PAS 91: Financial & Business Standing, Environmental Impact & Sustainability, Quality Management, Equal Opportunities & Diversity, Anti-Bribery & Corruption & Modern Slavery.
