Vassall Centre Trust
Completed: March 2009
Solarsense installed 12.6kWp (70x) polycrystalline modules on the roof of the award-winning, barrier-free office space for disabled organisations. The Vassall Centre Trust, which owns and manages the Vassall Centre in Fishponds, Bristol, commissioned the installation - one of the largest in Bristol to date - after realising the potential of the extensive flat roofs on the converted military hospital. The system allows the David Hiatt-Baker Conference Centre to operate as a carbon-neutralised facility, and has sparked a huge amount of interest amongst the multiple building user groups, and also within the local community. The system, mounted on Console ballasted bins, on the asphalt roof of Unit 7, should yield up to 11,000kWh per annum - possibly earning the centre up to £3,900 in income from electrical units sold to the National Grid for 20+ years, and saving 5.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide per year in the process. The total cost of the system to the Vassall Centre Trust was the VAT only - amounting to £3100 - with the rest of the funding coming from a) The Low Carbon Building Programme Phase 2 and b) the Barclaycard Breathe Project. This is an excellent example of a forward-thinking organisation taking a bold initiative.
